Bear captured in Italy after killing Alpine jogger, fate to be decided

A 17-year-old bear named JJ4 was captured in the Italian Alps after killing a 26-year-old jogger named Andrea Papi. The bear was initially ordered to be put down, but this order was later rescinded. JJ4 is now being held at a wildlife center while her fate is being decided.

Papi was killed while jogging above the town of Caldes in the north-eastern region of Trentino-Alto Adige. He was attacked by the bear and suffered multiple bite wounds. He died at the scene.

JJ4's parents were brought into northern Italy from Slovenia. She was captured after forest rangers with dogs tracked her footprints in snow in a mountain range known as the Brenta Dolomites.

The killing of Papi has sparked a debate about the presence of bears in Italy. Some people believe that the bears should be relocated to a more remote area, while others believe that they should be allowed to live in the Alps.
