Experts Reveal the Shocking Effects of Drinking Soda Every Day

The love affair with soda is well-documented, with over 63% of youth and 49% of adults indulging in the fizzy, sugary drinks on a daily basis. But while the allure of that first refreshing sip is undeniable, the long-term consequences of this habit can be quite alarming.

Registered dietitian Sonya Angelone explains that the initial effects of drinking soda are a spike in energy from the caffeine and sugar, which are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. However, this burst of energy is short-lived, and eventually gives way to a crash. Furthermore, the carbonation and high sugar content can wreak havoc on the gastrointestinal system, leading to bloating, gas, and digestive issues.

The long-term impacts of a daily soda habit are even more concerning. According to regenerative medicine specialist Dr. Neil Paulvin, soda consumption is linked to weight gain, particularly around the midsection. This belly fat is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and even certain cancers.

Beyond weight gain, Paulvin warns that soda drinkers, regardless of whether they choose regular or diet varieties, have a higher risk of heart disease and stroke. The high sugar levels and artificial sweeteners also contribute to inflammation in the brain, which has been linked to depression and dementia.

Dr. Supriya Rao, a quadruple board-certified physician, adds that the daily disruption to the gut microbiome caused by soda's high sugar content can lead to chronic issues like abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation.

So, how can one break the soda habit? Experts suggest identifying what it is you enjoy about soda, whether it's the caffeine boost or the carbonation and sweetness, and finding healthier alternatives to satisfy those cravings. Sparkling water, infused waters, and beverages like matcha or kombucha can provide similar sensory experiences without the detrimental health effects.

The key, according to Angelone, is to transition soda from an everyday staple to an occasional treat. While it may not be easy, the immediate and long-term benefits to your overall wellbeing make it a worthwhile effort.
