Italian PM Meloni Announces Split from Longtime Partner

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced she has separated from her partner of nearly 10 years, television journalist Andrea Giambruno.

In a social media post, Meloni stated that their paths had diverged for some time and acknowledged the end of the relationship. The couple has a 7-year-old daughter together.

Meloni's right-wing coalition government has promoted traditional family values as a policy priority since taking power last year. Her split comes after recent criticism of sexist comments made by Giambruno.

The TV journalist drew backlash in August for remarks seen as victim-blaming regarding a gang rape case. This week, satirical shows aired leaked off-air footage of Giambruno making inappropriate comments to female colleagues.

Giambruno works for Mediaset, owned by the family of former PM and Meloni ally Silvio Berlusconi. Meloni previously declined to answer questions about her partner's behavior.

In her statement, Meloni said her private life would not distract her from leading the government. Some political opponents have suggested the controversy could weaken her domestic agenda.

Meloni's relationship with Giambruno has been under public scrutiny since she took office. Their split spotlights the challenges facing women leaders in balancing private and public life.

However, Meloni has defiantly asserted she will not let the breakup detract from governing. She continues leading her governing coalition during a politically volatile time for Italy and Europe.
