Manchester United Tap Dan Ashworth to Lead Scouting Overhaul

Manchester United are poised to name Dan Ashworth as their new director of football. His priority will be to rebuild the club's scouting department and transfer strategy.

United is in talks with Newcastle to release Ashworth from his current role as their sporting director. Sources say Ashworth could get permission to join United in the coming days, but would likely need to serve a gardening leave period before officially starting.

The expected hiring comes as Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS group prepares to take over football operations at United. INEOS wants to transform United's poor recent recruitment record. Despite being among the highest spending clubs in recent years, United has won just one trophy since 2018.

Ashworth built a strong reputation for smart transfers at Brighton between 2018-2022. He also overhauled scouting and development in the English national team system.

To further bolster United's recruitment, Ashworth is eyeing Brighton's current head of recruitment Sam Jewell to play a key role. Jewell has unearthed several top South American talents for Brighton at bargain prices.

Chelsea is also reportedly interested in Jewell. While an approach is yet to be made, Jewell's success aligns with United and Ashworth's goals to revitalize player scouting.

Newcastle is open to releasing Ashworth but will likely demand a significant fee, given he remains under contract. Any move would also involve a lengthy gardening leave unless United makes an additional payment. United is hopeful Ashworth can join soon to impact their summer transfer plans.
