Microsoft's GitHub to lay off Indian engineering team

Microsoft's GitHub is planning to lay off nearly all of its engineering team in India, according to a report from TechCrunch. The layoffs are part of a larger restructuring effort at GitHub, which was acquired by Microsoft in 2018.

The layoffs will affect about 100 employees in India, which represents about 80% of GitHub's engineering team in the country. The layoffs are expected to be completed by the end of the month.

In a statement, a spokesperson for GitHub said that the company is "making some changes to our team structure in order to better focus on our core products and services." The spokesperson also said that GitHub is "committed to supporting our employees through this transition."

The layoffs at GitHub come at a time when the company is facing increasing competition from other cloud-based software development platforms, such as GitLab and Bitbucket. GitHub is also facing pressure from Microsoft to integrate its products with other Microsoft products, such as Visual Studio and Azure.

The layoffs are likely to have a significant impact on GitHub's operations in India. The company has been one of the most successful tech companies in India, and the layoffs are likely to dampen morale among its employees. The layoffs are also likely to make it more difficult for GitHub to attract and retain top talent in India.
