Nigerians Raise Alarm Over Yoruba Secession Declaration by MKO Abiola's Wife

Nigerians have expressed concern and outrage over a recent declaration by Modupe Onitiri Abiola, the widow of the late Moshood Abiola, also known as MKO Abiola. In a viral video, Modupe proclaimed the "sovereignty of the democratic republic of Yoruba," stating that the Yoruba people have seceded from Nigeria effective April 12, 2024.

Modupe's declaration has been met with backlash on social media, with many Nigerians condemning it as a treasonable offense. Some have argued that the Yoruba nation agitators are misguided and delusional, while others have called for the government to take swift action against such secessionist activities.

The controversy has deepened after reports emerged that members of the "Ominira Yoruba," a secessionist group led by Modupe, had invaded the Oyo State Government secretariat, leading to their arrest by security forces. This incident has further heightened tensions and concerns among Nigerians.

Leading Yoruba nation figures, such as Professor Banji Akintoye and Sunday Adeyemo (popularly known as Sunday Igboho), have distanced themselves from Modupe's proclamation, indicating that it does not represent the views of the broader Yoruba self-determination movement.

The developments have sparked a nationwide discussion on the delicate issue of Nigeria's unity and the government's response to secessionist agitations. Analysts and commentators have called for a measured and constructive approach to addressing the concerns of various ethnic groups, while emphasizing the need to maintain the country's territorial integrity.
