Review Examines 8 Supplement Ingredients That May Enhance Memory

A new review published in CNS Drugs looked at ingredients commonly found in over-the-counter memory and brain health supplements. The global market for these products is substantial and expected to reach $16 billion by 2030.

After surveying popular supplements sold on sites like Amazon and in stores like CVS, the researchers identified 18 frequently used ingredients. They then reviewed the scientific evidence on these compounds' effects on memory and cognition.

The analysis found limited or no proof that ingredients like apoaequorin, coenzyme Q10, L-theanine, and vitamins B6, B9, and B12 boost brain function. But some data showed memory benefits from supplements containing these 8 ingredients:

- Ashwagandha

- Choline

- Curcumin

- Ginger

- Lion's mane mushroom

- Polyphenols

- Phosphatidylserine

- Turmeric

Several other ingredients had mixed evidence, like carnitine, ginkgo biloba, huperzine A, and vitamins D and E.

While many supplements claim to sharpen memory, robust research is lacking for most component ingredients. But the review helps identify some of the more promising compounds that may enhance memory based on current data.
