Tragedy struck on Tuesday morning in Uganda when a government minister, Retired Colonel Charles Okello Engola, was shot and killed at his home by a soldier who was meant to be guarding him. The incident has sent shockwaves through the country, and many are struggling to come to terms with the loss of such a senior and respected government official.

Details of the shooting are still emerging, and it is unclear what led the soldier to turn his weapon on Col Engola. Some eyewitnesses have reported that the soldier walked around the neighborhood shooting in the air before turning the gun on himself. It is not yet known whether there was an argument or altercation between the two men before the fatal shots were fired.

The incident has also reportedly left a number of people injured, and videos circulating on social media show locals gathering at the scene in shock and disbelief. Col Engola was a highly regarded member of the government, having previously served as a deputy minister for defence, and his death has left a gaping hole in Uganda's political landscape.

The Speaker of Uganda's parliament, Anita Among, confirmed Col Engola's death in a statement while presiding over the morning session. She expressed her condolences and asked that Col Engola's soul rest in peace, while acknowledging that the tragedy was part of God's plan.

As investigations into the shooting continue, many are calling for increased support and resources for soldiers who may be dealing with a range of stresses and challenges that can affect their mental and emotional well-being. It is crucial that military personnel have access to the resources and support systems they need to manage their mental health, and to address any issues before they escalate into tragic incidents like this.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Col Engola, as well as with the soldier who lost his life in the incident. May they both rest in peace.
