Violence escalates in East Jerusalem, two wounded in shooting

A gunman opened fire on a vehicle in East Jerusalem on Tuesday, wounding two people. The attack comes after a year of escalating violence between Israelis and Palestinians. Israeli police are searching for the suspected attacker.

The shooting took place in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem, a volatile area that has been the site of several recent clashes between Palestinians and Israeli settlers. The two victims of the shooting were moderately injured and taken to a hospital for treatment.

The Israeli military also reported that a house in a kibbutz in northern Israel was hit by gunfire on Tuesday, but no one was injured.

The violence comes as Israelis and Palestinians are marking the holy month of Ramadan and the Jewish holiday of Passover. The two holidays often coincide, leading to increased tensions in the region.

In recent months, there has been a sharp increase in violence between Israelis and Palestinians. In March, 11 people were killed in a series of attacks in Israel, including four in a single shooting in Bnei Brak. In response, Israeli forces killed more than 20 Palestinians in the West Bank.

The violence has raised concerns about a return to the kind of widespread violence that engulfed the region in 2014.
